James specialises in domestic and cross border disputes in the banking and financial services sectors together with risk management, contentious regulatory and investigatory work. He has been involved in a large number of high profile matters before domestic and international courts, as well as arbitral bodies.

Experience
  • Acting for the Federal Republic of Brazil in relation to the alleged corruption of Paulo Maluf, the former mayor of Sao Paulo.
  • Acting for the Claimants in a successful action to enforce a letter of credit issued as security for a structured finance transaction entered into by the Claimants and a subsidiary of Enron (Mahonia Limited and JP Morgan Chase Bank -v- WestLB AG [2004] EWHC 1938 (Comm)).
  • Acting for Riyad Bank in a successful US$40 million breach of contract/professional negligence claim arising from a sharia compliant leasing fund (Riyad Bank and Others -v- Ahli United Bank (UK) Plc: [2006] 2 All E.R. (Comm) 777). 
  • Acting for ANZ Banking Group Ltd in relation to the collapse of the Opes Prime securities lending business (In the matter of Opes Prime Stockbroking Ltd [2009] FCA 813; [2009] FCA 864).
  • Acting for British Airways in the European Commission and OFT investigations into alleged cartel activity in the provision of air freight services and the imposition of long-haul passenger surcharges. 
  • Acting for the defendant in a multi million pound arbitration claim concerning a right of first refusal under a share purchase agreement. 
  • Acting for the Bristol Port Company, a representative defendant, in the Pilots Pension Fund litigation. (Chancery Division).
